Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS)

Prairie Community Services, Inc. (PCS) provides Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS) in Marshall, MN and Duluth, MN.  The IRTS facilities are intended for adults who are experiencing significant difficulty with activities of daily life because of a serious mental illness. The program is short term (up to 90 days) and directed toward transition back into the community.  IRTS services are billed and paid for through insurance; please verify coverage with individual’s health insurance provider prior to referring.

For an individual to qualify for IRTS, they must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Diagnosed with a mental illness (MI) according to dimensions outline in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR).
  • Has the need for mental health services that cannot be met with other available community-based services or is likely to experience a mental health crisis or require a more restrictive setting if intensive rehabilitative mental health services are not provided as determined by the written opinion of a mental health professional (MHP).
  • The individual must also be functionally impaired because of MI, in three or more areas of a functional assessment:
    • Mental Health Symptoms
    • Mental Health Service Needs
    • Use of drugs and alcohol.
    • Vocational and educational functioning
    • Social functioning, including the use of leisure time.
    • Interpersonal functioning, including relationships with the adult’s family.
    • Self-care and independent living capacity.
    • Medical and dental health.
    • Financial assistance needs.
    • Housing and transportation needs.
  • Additionally, one or more of the following:
    • History of recurring or prolonged inpatient hospitalization in the past year.
    • Significant independent living instability.
    • Homelessness.
    • Frequent use of mental health and related services yielding poor outcomes.

Brentwood (Marshall, MN)

Brentwood is a 10 bed IRTS facility that serves both male and female individuals ages 18 years of age or older. Brentwood is a single level, wheelchair accessible home. There are 10 single bedrooms with half baths. Other amenities include a whirlpool tub room and a multi-use room. One of the 10 beds is a swing bed that can be utilized as an IRTS bed, or as a crisis stabilization bed.

Fresh Start (Duluth, MN)

Fresh Start is a 10 bed IRTS facility that serves female identifying individuals ages 18 years of age or older. Fresh Start is a three-story home that has six individual/single bedrooms, two dual/shared bedrooms, two full baths, and two half baths. Fresh Start also has a multi-use room, a craft room, and an exercise space available to individuals served.
